Abstract
BACKGROUND: Viagra (sildenafil) has been a revolutionary treatment for erectile dysfunction since its approval in 1998. However, along with its medical benefits, it has gained notoriety for having a considerable street value. This article investigates the street price of Viagra, factors influencing its value, and the implications for both users and dealers. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach, including surveys and interviews with users, dealers, and healthcare professionals, was conducted in urban areas where Viagra misuse is prevalent. RESULTS: The street price of Viagra varies widely, ranging from $5 to $30 per pill, depending on several factors, including location, demand, and supply. Many users reported purchasing the drug illegally due to stigma surrounding erectile dysfunction treatment, and dealers noted that the ease of access to counterfeit pills complicates the market. INTERPRETATION: Understanding the street value of Viagra is crucial for addressing misuse and guiding public health strategies aimed at reducing the non-medical use of prescription medications.
Introduction
Viagra, generically known as sildenafil, is primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). While it has transformed the lives of many, reports indicate a rising trend in its illicit use and resale. This article aims to determine the street price of Viagra, explore the social dynamics behind its demand, and discuss potential health risks associated with purchasing the drug outside legitimate channels. The stigma attached to ED often drives individuals to seek out illicit sources, further complicating the narrative surrounding its use and the associated market.
Methods
This study employed a mixed-methods research design, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative techniques. An anonymous survey was distributed to individuals frequenting urban areas known for illicit drug exchange, enabling us to gather valuable data on purchasing behaviors and perceptions. Users often reported purchasing Viagra discreetly due to embarrassment over their condition, leading to a flourishing underground market that thrives on stigma and misinformation surrounding ED.

The street value of Viagra highlights a critical public health concern. Many individuals resort to purchasing Viagra illicitly, often oblivious to the risks associated with counterfeit medications. These counterfeit products can contain dangerous substances and might not provide the intended therapeutic effects, posing significant health threats to consumers. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding ED can act as a barrier to legitimate access, pushing individuals toward unregulated sources.
