What is sildenafil?
Sildenafil citrate, known widely as generic Viagra or Revatio, is a prescription medication used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). This medication plays a crucial role in improving erectile function by enhancing blood flow to the penis, which can lead to successful sexual intercourse. Additionally, for individuals suffering from PAH, sildenafil helps relax the blood vessels in the lungs, increasing blood flow and thus potentially improving exercise capacity.
Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that can significantly affect an individual's relationships, self-esteem, and overall quality of life. Conversely, untreated PAH can lead to serious health consequences, including heart failure and reduced oxygen levels in the blood. Therefore, speaking with your healthcare provider about whether sildenafil is an appropriate treatment option for your specific medical situation is essential.
What are common side effects of sildenafil?
While most individuals tolerate sildenafil well, some patients may experience mild side effects. These can include headache, light sensitivity, heartburn, diarrhea, difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying awake, color vision changes, muscle aches, nasal congestion, nosebleeds, and sensations of tingling or numbness. It is advisable to contact your healthcare provider if you notice any concerning symptoms, as they may indicate a need for medical review.
Although rare, more severe side effects may occur, such as chest pain, blurred vision, ringing in the ears or sudden loss of hearing, dizziness or fainting, skin rash or itching, painful urination, shortness of breath, or priapism—an erection lasting longer than four hours which requires immediate medical attention.
