Boots launches own-brand Viagra without prescription
Boots has officially announced its plans to start providing its own-brand version of Viagra to assist men who are facing difficulties related to erectile dysfunction. This initiative aims to make treatment more accessible for those who may feel hesitant to seek help for such a common issue.
The well-known high-street pharmacy has confirmed that it will offer sildenafil, which is the generic form of Viagra, without requiring a prescription in over 1,400 of its retail locations as well as through its online platform.
While this service is a significant step toward greater accessibility, patients will still need to participate in an online consultation with a trained pharmacist or complete an online assessment prior to obtaining the medication.
Pricing for this medication has been set at £14.99 for a four-pack of the treatment, while a larger pack containing eight tablets will be available for £26.99.
According to information provided by the NHS, erectile dysfunction is a frequently reported issue, particularly among men aged 40 and older.
Factors such as stress, fatigue, anxiety, and excessive alcohol consumption can worsen the issue, while underlying health conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases may also play a role in its development.
The NHS advises individuals who are regularly experiencing erectile dysfunction to speak with their GP, as it may be indicative of a more serious medical concern.
A comprehensive study conducted by King’s College London in 2019 revealed that as many as one in five men, which translates to approximately 4.3 million men across the UK, could be affected by erectile dysfunction.
This research highlighted a connection between impotence and an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, and a potential increase in mortality rates.
Furthermore, it was estimated that by the year 2025, around 322 million men globally could face similar issues.
Sildenafil works by relaxing blood vessels and boosting blood circulation to the genitals and was initially developed in 1989 by the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, who stumbled upon its unexpected benefits while searching for a solution to treat heart-related chest pain.
This medication received approval for medical use in both the EU and the US in 1998, marking a significant breakthrough in treatment options for erectile dysfunction.
Marc Donovan OBE, chief pharmacist at Boots, emphasized that “Erectile dysfunction is a prevalent condition that most men will encounter at some stage in their lives. It is generally nothing to be overly concerned or embarrassed about.”
He also pointed out that there are immediate lifestyle changes that can be beneficial in managing erectile dysfunction, such as maintaining a healthy weight through a well-balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity, working to alleviate stress and anxiety levels, moderating alcohol consumption, ensuring adequate sleep, and quitting smoking.
Men who continue to face challenges with erections, particularly those under 40, are encouraged to discuss these issues with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.
