Side effects of tadalafil - Brand names: Cialis, Adcirca

Like all medicines, tadalafil can cause side effects in some people; however, it is important to note that many individuals experience no side effects or only mild ones, which are often manageable.

Common side effects

Common side effects of tadalafil are reported in more than 1 in 100 individuals. If you are using it specifically for erectile dysfunction, the likelihood of experiencing side effects is reduced, particularly since most patients use it intermittently for a short duration.

For those taking tadalafil for pulmonary hypertension, if you encounter any side effects, consider the following recommendations to help alleviate them:

Headaches

Ensure you get adequate rest and maintain hydration by drinking plenty of fluids. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption during this time. You may also consult with your pharmacist for a suitable painkiller to alleviate headache discomfort.

Typically, headaches will subside after the initial week of taking tadalafil. If headaches persist beyond a week or are particularly severe, it is advisable to consult your physician for further evaluation.

Feeling sick (nausea)

Eating simple meals while steering clear of rich, spicy foods may be beneficial. If taking tadalafil for pulmonary hypertension, consider ingesting it post-meal or after a light snack to minimize nausea.

Facial flushing and hot flushes

Reducing intake of coffee, tea, and alcohol can help mitigate facial flushing. Maintaining a cool environment and using a fan may provide further relief. Additionally, consider spraying your face with cool water or sipping cold beverages.

Generally, facial flushing should resolve within a few days.

Indigestion

For discomfort due to indigestion, over-the-counter antacids may offer relief; however, if the issue persists or becomes bothersome, consulting with a healthcare professional is recommended to explore additional medication options that can protect your stomach.

Stuffy nose

Engage with a pharmacist or your doctor for advice; they may suggest a decongestant nasal spray that can alleviate the blockage.

Muscle aches

If you experience any unusual muscle soreness not attributed to physical activity, consult your pharmacist for a pain relief option. If muscle aches persist, a follow-up with your healthcare provider is recommended.

Most side effects will dissipate once you cease taking the medication. If the coping strategies provided do not alleviate your discomfort or if a side effect continues to trouble you, it is crucial to reach out to a healthcare provider for further support.

Serious side effects

Serious side effects are infrequent, occurring in less than 1 in 1,000 users of the medication.

Urgent advice: Seek immediate medical attention at A&E if:

  • you suddenly experience a loss of vision or abrupt hearing changes – discontinue the use of tadalafil immediately if this occurs
  • you endure a prolonged or painful erection, particularly if it persists for over 2 hours

Locate your nearest A&E department

Immediate action required: Dial 999 without delay if:

  • you suffer a seizure
  • you experience chest pain

It is imperative to stop taking tadalafil if you encounter any of these symptoms.

If you experience chest pain during or following sexual activity and you routinely consume nitrates, such as glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), avoid taking them as a remedy for your chest pain.

Information:

Driving yourself to A&E is not advisable.

The operator you contact at 999 will provide guidance on the next steps to take.

Serious allergic reaction

In rare circumstances, tadalafil has the potential to induce a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).

Immediate action required: Call 999 immediately if:

  • you notice sudden swelling of your lips, mouth, throat, or tongue
  • you find yourself breathing rapidly or having difficulty breathing (you could become extremely wheezy or feel a choking sensation)
  • your throat feels constricted or you are struggling to swallow
  • your skin, tongue, or lips appear blue, gray, or pale (for individuals with dark skin tones, this may be noticeable on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet)
  • you suddenly feel very confused, drowsy, or lightheaded
  • someone loses consciousness and cannot be roused
  • a child appears limp, floppy, or unresponsive as they typically would (for instance, their head may drop to the side or they may struggle to maintain head control or focus on faces)

You or the affected individual may also experience a rash that is swollen, raised, itchy, blistering, or peeling.

These symptoms can indicate a severe allergic reaction necessitating urgent medical treatment in a hospital setting.

Information:

Do not drive yourself to A&E.

The operator at 999 will offer advice regarding what steps to take next.

It is crucial to understand that these are not comprehensive side effects associated with tadalafil. For a more detailed list, please refer to the leaflet accompanying your medication packet.
