How and when to take tadalafil - Brand names: Cialis, Adcirca

It's imperative that you take this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider, whether that be a doctor or a pharmacist.

If you have received a private prescription for tadalafil, make sure you thoroughly read the accompanying information leaflet that comes with your medication. The specific strength and the dosing instructions can differ based on your individual requirements.

Dosage and strength

Tadalafil is available in several strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets, each formulated to cater to varying health needs.

Dose for erectile dysfunction

Typically, the standard dose of tadalafil recommended for erectile dysfunction is 10mg, taken as needed prior to sexual activity. It is crucial that you do not take more than one tablet within a 24-hour period.

Your healthcare provider may adjust your dosage based on your individual response to the medication and how frequently you utilize it.

The therapeutic effects of tadalafil may persist for longer than 24 hours, so daily administration of the 10mg or 20mg tablets is generally not advised.

For the medication to be effective, it is necessary to be sexually stimulated during the time of administration.

Dose for benign prostate enlargement

For individuals dealing with benign prostate enlargement, tadalafil is prescribed in either 2.5mg or 5mg tablet forms. The usual dosage for this condition is 5mg, taken once each day.

When treating both benign prostate enlargement along with erectile dysfunction, the regular dosage remains at 5mg.

Dose for pulmonary hypertension

When used for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, tadalafil is available in 20mg tablets.

The recommended starting dose for pulmonary hypertension is generally 40mg—this equates to two 20mg tablets taken once daily.

If you suffer from kidney or liver ailments, your doctor may decide to reduce your initial dose to either 10mg or 20mg.

Be sure to swallow your tablets whole with a full glass of water or juice, but refrain from using grapefruit juice as it may interact with the medication.

For those taking tadalafil for erectile dysfunction, it’s best to consume one tablet at least 30 minutes before you plan on engaging in sexual activity.

If you are taking tadalafil to manage symptoms of prostate enlargement, you have the flexibility to take your tablet in the morning or evening; the key is consistency in timing each day.

Keep in mind that tadalafil tablets for pulmonary hypertension are larger and might be challenging to swallow, so take care with this.

If you forget to take it

In the event that you forget to take your prescribed dosage:

  • For benign prostate enlargement – take it immediately as soon as you remember and proceed with your usual dosing schedule.
  • For pulmonary hypertension – if you recall within 8 hours, take it as soon as possible. If you remember after the 8-hour window, skip the missed dose and resume with your next scheduled dose.

Never attempt to take two doses at one time, and do not take an extra dose in an effort to compensate for a missed one.

If you find that you often overlook taking your medications, setting an alarm to remind you might be beneficial. Additionally, consider seeking advice from your pharmacist regarding alternative methods to help ensure you remember to take your medication as prescribed.

If you take too much

Experimenting with higher doses than prescribed can lead to undesirable side effects, which may include but are not limited to:

  • headaches
  • dizziness or lightheadedness
  • indigestion and upset stomach
  • nasal congestion
  • visual disturbances, such as blurring

Urgent advice: Reach out to 111 for immediate guidance if:

  • you consume more than your recommended dose of tadalafil
