Sildenafil (oral route)

It is essential that you inform all of your healthcare providers that you are taking sildenafil. This is particularly crucial if you ever find yourself in need of emergency medical treatment for any cardiac issues. Your doctor must be aware of the last time you took sildenafil to ensure your safety and provide appropriate care.
It's critical to avoid using this medication if you are concurrently taking any nitrate-based drugs, which are often prescribed for managing angina or treating high blood pressure. Medications that fall under the category of nitrates include nitroglycerin, isosorbide, and various brand names like Imdur®, Nitro-Bid®, Nitro-Dur®, Nitrol® ointment, Nitrolingual® spray, Nitrostat®, and Transderm Nitro®. Additionally, steer clear of any illegal substances known as "poppers," which include amyl nitrate, butyl nitrate, or nitrite. Also, do not combine sildenafil with riociguat (Adempas®), as interactions can be hazardous.
In cases where sildenafil is being prescribed for pulmonary arterial hypertension, your physician will schedule regular follow-up appointments to monitor your response to the treatment. These visits are vital for assessing the effectiveness of the medication and determining whether you should continue using it in your treatment plan.
When using sildenafil for pulmonary arterial hypertension, it's important to refrain from taking Viagra® or other PDE5 inhibitors, such as tadalafil (Cialis®) or vardenafil (Levitra®), as Viagra® contains sildenafil itself. The risk of experiencing adverse side effects significantly increases when taking excessive amounts of sildenafil or combining it with these other medications.
Never combine sildenafil with any other treatments or devices that are designed to induce erections, as this could lead to serious complications.
It's crucial to disclose any existing heart conditions or a history of heart problems to your healthcare provider. This medication can pose significant risks and may result in severe side effects for individuals with cardiac issues.
If you find yourself experiencing a prolonged or painful erection lasting for four hours or longer, seek immediate medical attention. Untreated, this condition could lead to serious, irreversible damage to your penis, which necessitates prompt medical intervention.
If you suddenly experience a loss of vision in one or both eyes, reach out to your healthcare provider without delay. This symptom may indicate a serious condition requiring urgent evaluation.
Immediately consult your doctor if you notice a sudden decrease in hearing or experience hearing loss, particularly if accompanied by dizziness or ringing in your ears. These symptoms could indicate serious complications that should be addressed promptly.
If you are already prescribed medications for high blood pressure (hypertension), be aware that taking sildenafil may lead to dangerously low blood pressure levels. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice symptoms such as blurred vision, confusion, dizziness, fainting, lightheadedness upon standing, excessive sweating, or unusual fatigue or weakness.
Please note that this medication does not provide protection against sexually transmitted infections (including HIV or AIDS). It is advisable to use appropriate protective measures and consult your healthcare professional if you have further inquiries regarding this matter.
Do not take any other medications without prior discussion with your healthcare provider. This advisory includes all prescription, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, as well as herbal products and vitamin supplements.
